No man will sincerely offer such a prayer as this, unless he has learned, by the example of the Apostle Paul, “to be full and to be hungry, to abound and to suffer need,” (Philippians 4:12,) to endure patiently his poverty or his humble condition, and not to be intoxicated by a false confidence in his abundance. (J. Calvin) 이 세상에서 누리는 풍부함은 우리를 거짓된 확신에 빠지게 할 수 있다. 성장주의와 부흥주의에 섞여있는 치명적 독소, 거짓된 확신이다.

신앙적인 논쟁의 문제들에서 어떤 싸움을 할 것인가?는 대단히 중요한 문제로 인식해야 한다. 최근의 한 문제를 겪으면서 싸움의 내용과 함께 싸움의 방식이 얼마나 중요한가를 새삼 깨닫게 된다. 그와 더불어 신앙에 있어서 승리란 때로는 옳음을 증명하고도 패배하는 경우에도 해당된다는 점을 잊지 말아야 한다고 생각한다. 지난 주일 오후에 교회사(P.Schaff)를 공부하면서 이런 생각과 잘 어울어지는 한 부분을 접하게 되었다. 스위스 지역에도 종교개혁이 서서히 일어나기 시작했다. 그 선두주자로 쮜리히의 쯔빙글리가 있었다. 그러나 "스위스 의회는 쯔빙글리의 종교개혁을 반대하는 입장을 취했다." 그 이유는 의회의 대부분은 세습 귀족과 왕족들로 채워졌고 그들은 일반 대중들보다는 보수적이었으며 구교를 선호했기 때문이다..
